Blogging about glass artistry in all forms

I'm pretty sure most artists can understand the desire to have something they need in order to create their art and with Christmas coming one can only hope they get what they really want, or can they?

This year I decided that I will "influence" my gift. I went online, ordered it and sent my hubby and email saying my gift will be delivered. You cannot open it or know what it is so one of us is surprised! He laughed; and when the mail came he was true to his words. It is wrapped and waiting for me for Christmas. He has no idea what it is and it really has been fun. Not that I would do that every year, but I can't wait to open it!

I'm so bad, lol.

Hi there,

New at this, but just wanted to throw out a question.

Has anyone used the "Safe Fibers" in place of kiln shelf paper?  I am in the process of changing over to the safe and healthier uses for long term fusing and was actually wondering if there was a cost break out there? I understand the limitations in comparison to the quick throw away (or hepa-vacuum away!) of shelf paper, but would love to avoid continuous priming for the continuous firing of my work in addition to lots of full classes I teach.

As a proud father of three, I am constantly wary about disclosing my offspring to unnecessary amounts of any one thing. Fifty years of existence have taught me that large amounts of any one thing, regardless of what it is, may be counterproductive. I was wary of the thought of my offspring having cell phones, and I should have been. I observe young kids (many that could even be in elementary school) gawking at their cell phones for prolonged periods of time, dead to the outside world. Children must be going out, enjoying life, interacting with people (physically), and just experiencing life. The excess of technology our children are being persistently bombarded with every hour is kind of frightening.

With my own offspring, I restrict them to one hours daily on the tube, one hours daily on the computer(with school work as an exception) and one hours daily for Xbox. I find these restrictions are completely acceptable. My children, unfortunately, do not. When they started at Mount Caramel, they were noticing their friends with iPhones. Obviously, they started begging me to buy them cell phones of their own. I was first skeptical of the notion. Recent mobiles are like tiny laptops, and I knew they would spend all day playing around with their phones.

My view began to alter when my children explained to me about many of the productive features of phones and PCs. They explained how the internet can be used for collaborative note taking, tutoring, books online, and other things. When it came time for them to begin their SAT prep, they explained that there are plenty of iPad test prep apps. Who might have thought an iPad could be a tool for test prep? I told them that I might buy them mobiles, and if they ranked above a twenty-eight on their SATs, they would be allowed to keep them and I might pay for them through higher education. They accepted, and purchased an program called Watermelon express. I would highly vouch for it to all the students out there. I'm pleased to report that my children actually got well better then their goal, and I have an enormous cell phone payment!

A year has gotten away from me-unusual family reasons pulled me from the glass table. I'm hoping to return to regular glass playtime soon. Life has evened out and I have plenty of glass sheets wanting attention.

Gardens and yard demand hours this time of year, but the good part is seeing the returning colors that can be translated to glass projects. Ideas are percolating and teaching beckons. Hope others are doing well.

The purpose of this seminar is to make an expressive form of the human figure suggested by a garment made in glass.
In the first class you will be guided in the design and characterization, proportions, posture, movement of the fabric, etc., through modeling clay.
You will creat a matrix mold that will allow you to use it and repeat as many times as necessary. You will cut the glass to the proper size and use different techniques in making the details.
There will be 2 firings: one flat, a second one on the mold, and the final cold work.
The seminar will take 4 days, and I will track each piece individually.
