Dicro Slide

With dichroic glass being a rather expensive investment for large pieces (>$50 for an 8" sheet) and something you might not use everyday, I was pretty pleased to come across a product called Dicro Slide. Dicro Slide is essentially a sheet of very thin dichroic material backed onto some stiff paper. When it is wet, the stiff paper slides off and you use the remaining Dicro Slide in your glass work.

After ordering it and having it sit in my cupboard for a few months, I decided to test it out and see whether it might become a useful, cheaper alternative to normal dichroic glass.

Spiral Arts Standard Cup Pipe

Review

My university got two of these the start of last semester for the intermediate, advance, and grad students to use.  These pipes have put up with the use and abuse of about 15 students with little signs of wear, and most importantly are still totally straight.

They have great balance for 1-2.5 gathers and handle wonderfully for cups. These pipes also work well for other small pieces that take about two gathers, for color cups, blown feet, and the like.

Spiral Arts Standard Workhorse Pipe

Review

I have used this pipe for a good 4 months about 6 hours of blowing a week.  The only sign of wear on the pipe is the light scale/patina/corrosion on the out side that is expected from a plain steel pipe (especially in as humid of an area as I am in).

I usually work about 2 solid gathers on this pipe pretty easily unless the piece is very long, and can work 3 gathers on a shorter piece with a little effort.

Jim Moore 10.5" Jacks

Review

The Jim Moore 10.5" Jacks in one word... HUGE.  Not a bad thing but be prepared, because even with warning I almost could not believe it.  I got a pair of these from a friend who used them once for about 2/3 the new price and am pretty happy with them.  They will take some getting used to and you will probably poke a piece with the tips by accident... ask me how I know.
